Privacy Policy

UnitedMenus is a directory of restaurant menus and locations. This policy explains what we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. 🔒

Information we collect

Information you give us

• Account details. If you create an account, we collect your email address and display name. Authentication is handled by Google Firebase Authentication, your password is set and stored by Firebase, and we never see or store it.
• Places you submit. If you submit a restaurant through our public form, we collect the details you enter about the place along with your contact name, and the phone number or email you choose to give us so we can follow up.
• Reports and feedback. If you report a problem with a listing or vote on a menu item, we store your submission and, when you are signed in, the account that made it.

Information collected automatically

• Log data. Like most websites, our servers record standard request information such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested.
• Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how the site is used in aggregate.
• Approximate location.The “near me” search asks your browser for your location. This only happens if you grant permission, and you can revoke it at any time in your browser settings. Your chosen and recent locations are kept in your browser’s local storage, not on our servers.

Cookies and local storage

We use a small number of cookies and browser storage keys:

• Essential. A session cookie (__session) keeps you signed in. Without it, accounts cannot work.
• Preferences. Local storage remembers your light/dark mode choice and your recently used locations. This data never leaves your device.
• Analytics and advertising. Set by the third parties described below.

Analytics and advertising cookies are only used with your permission. We ask on your first visit, and you can change or withdraw that permission at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, nothing beyond essential storage is used until you agree.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking the essential cookie will sign you out and prevent you from signing back in.

Advertising

We use third-party advertising companies, including Google, to serve ads when you visit this site.

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
• Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
• You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices.

Services we share data with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers needed to run the site:

• Google Firebase: authentication and analytics.
• Google Maps Platform: maps, place lookup and time zone resolution for restaurant locations.
• Stadia Maps: map tiles used in dark mode.
• Google AdSense and its advertising partners: as described above.

We may also disclose information where we are legally required to do so, or where it is necessary to investigate abuse of the site.

Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, and you can ask us to stop processing it. Signed-in users can edit their profile directly, and you may request account deletion at any time by writing to [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal bases for processing are your consent (for optional location access and advertising cookies), the performance of a contract (running your account), and our legitimate interest in operating and securing the site. You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request its deletion, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information; to opt out of personalised advertising, use the links in the Advertising section above.

Data retention

We keep account information for as long as your account is open. Place submissions and reports are retained as part of the directory record. Server logs are retained for a limited period for security and debugging.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

Traffic to the site is encrypted in transit, passwords are managed by Firebase Authentication rather than stored by us, and administrative areas are restricted by role. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site changes. The revision date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent version.
