Salerno's

Joseph Salerno was born in the Italian town of Castrolibero, in the province of Cosenza. Family and friends gathered in the family's two-room home to enjoy the traditional flavors of Calabria. His love of cooking dates back to his childhood, when he recalls making pizza in the back of the house in the brick oven. Rosario and Francesca Salerno brought their family to America in 1957, hoping to start a new and better life for their children. They arrived by boat at Ellis Island and eventually settled in Chicago. On the corner of 16th Street and Wesley in Berwyn, brothers Vincenzo, Arnaldo, and Joseph opened the Berwyn Tavern in 1966.
