Carl's Steaks

Salvatore Lando arrived in Massachusetts in 1915 after leaving his home in Ucria, Sicily, to provide his wife and three sons a better life. Lando Carlo Carl, one of the Salvatore's sons, was a noted Waltham, Massachusetts schoolteacher. Despite the fact that it was a respectable career, he had bigger plans for his son Sal's future. As a result, he remortgaged his home in 1968 to offer his kid a chance at the American Dream. Lando, Sal Sal Lando started Tory's Subs and Pizza on the corner of Waltham Street and Parker Street in Maynard, MA, with the help of his father. He worked seven days a week to provide a comfortable living for his family. Unfortunately, the business was destroyed by fire in 1972. Tory's reopened on lower Main Street across from Digital Equipment Corporation (a/k/a: The Mill) in 1973, after a family effort to restore. It was a considerably smaller establishment that couldn't serve pizza because of the space constraints, but it did serve the biggest and finest cheese steak subs. Carl's Steak Subs in Waltham, MA was such a success that he established another shop in 1980 in honor of his late father. Throughout their school years, both of Sal's sons (Tory and Carl) worked in the stores. The building that Tory's Subs and Pizza occupied in Maynard was then sold in 1983. Sal gave his two sons another chance at the American Dream at that point. Tory and Carl created T.C. Lando's Sub & Pizzeria in a commercial facility he purchased on downtown Main Street. They began providing Italian Pizza made from an old family recipe.
